After obtaining bachelor’s degrees in biology and mechanical engineering, and a master’s degree in theoretical mechanics, Dr. Choma worked as a design analyst in the FDA Orthopaedic group. After obtaining his medical degree in 1992 from Eastern Virginia Medical School, he performed his internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. His postgraduate training was interrupted for two years while he served as a U.S. Army Brigade Flight Surgeon for the 1st Armored Division in Germany.

In 2006, Dr. Choma joined the faculty at the University of Missouri - Columbia as Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Director of the Missouri Spine Center. He was inducted into the prestigious American Orthopaedic Association in 2008 and became the Vice chairman of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at MU. He has directed the Spine Fellowship at the University of Missouri since 2012 and serves as the J. Vernon Luck, Sr. Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. He also serves as the Chairman of the 700-physician University Physician practice group at the University of Missouri.
